Origin: Tropical West Africa. Mainly Ghana, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Cameroon.
Characteristics:
- Color: A rich color ranging from yellowish brown to golden brown or dark brown. Characterized by dark streaks that darken over time.
- Texture: It has a fine and straight grain. It is a very hard, heavy, and durable wood. It has high resistance to fatigue. It contains natural oils, making it highly resistant to decay, fungi, and insects (Durability Class 1-2). It is difficult to work with and can dull tools.
Other Names: Kokrodua, Assamela, African Teak, Pericopsis elata (botanical name). It should not be confused with the true Teak tree (Tectona grandis).
Uses: Outdoor structures (decks, pergolas), boat building, flooring (parquet), heavy construction lumber, luxury furniture, decorative veneers, and turned items.
