Ayous

Origin: Tropical West and Central Africa. Particularly Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and Nigeria.

Characteristics:

  • Color: Ranges from very light yellow to creamy white, even almost whitish in tone. It has a very pale, uniform, and matte appearance.
  • Texture: The texture is fine, straight, and extremely uniform. It is a very soft, extremely light, and porous wood. It is very easy to work with, cut, nail, shape on a lathe, and glue. When sanded, it produces a smooth surface. Its natural durability is poor, and it is not suitable for exposure to outdoor conditions.

Other Names: Abachi, Obeche, Wawa, Samba, African Whitewood, Triplochiton scleroxylon (botanical name).

Uses: Model aircraft and model making, toys (puzzles, jigsaw puzzles), frames, sound insulation panels, filler material, projects requiring light weight, background panels, ideal raw material for ThermoWood treatment.

Ayous is one of the lightest commercial woods found in nature. This unique feature makes it an indispensable material for model-making and hobby projects. At the same time, its durability is increased through thermal treatment (ThermoWood), allowing it to be used successfully in special interior applications such as bathrooms and saunas.
