Iroko

Origin: Tropical West Africa. Particularly the rainforests of Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon.

Characteristics:

  • Color: Can range from yellowish brown to rich, dark golden brown or reddish brown. The color darkens with exposure to air and light.
  • Texture: Moderately large and generally irregular texture. Hard and heavy. Contains natural oils, making it highly resistant to decay, fungi, and insects (Durability Class 1-2). May cause sharp blunting of tools.

Other Names: African Teak, Kambala, Odum, Mokongo, Milicia excelsa (botanical name). It is an alternative to teak.

Uses: Outdoor (decks, pergolas, garden furniture), exterior door and window frames, boat decks, flooring, industrial flooring, laboratory benches, and construction site tables.

Iroko is known as ‘Africa's green gold’ due to its natural durability and appearance similar to teak wood. Its structure, resistant to tropical climate conditions, makes it an excellent and more sustainable alternative to teak wood in demanding outdoor applications.
