Origin: Ayous: Tropical West and Central Africa (Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon).
Characteristics:
- Color: The very light yellow/cream color of natural Ayous darkens evenly during the thermal treatment. Tones ranging from light brown to dark chocolate brown can be achieved.
- Texture: Retains its fine and straight grain, but the surface becomes harder and denser.
- Mechanical Properties: Much more stable compared to untreated Ayous. Moisture absorption and swelling tendencies are greatly reduced (high dimensional stability). It has very high resistance to water and moisture. It becomes extremely resistant to mold, mildew, and decay (Natural durability class 1-2). The process does not involve chemicals; it is done entirely with heat and steam.
